January 20, 2012 - Efficient fertilizer use involves applying nutrients at the right time during the growing season. Most often, this time will coincide with increased nutrient demand and uptake of the crop. Crop growth stage is a good indicator of in-season nutrient demand. Local extension agents and crop advisors can provide publications describing crop development and nutrient uptake. Whether it’s Feekes 5 in wheat, V6 in corn, or tuber initiation in potato, understanding uptake patterns and being able to recognize different growth stages in crops will help growers make better decisions regarding the “Right Time” to make their fertilizer applications.

Bio/Contact Information

Agricultural production in the Southeast U.S. is diverse with over 50 M acres of cropland and another 54 M acres of established southern pine plantations. Widely produced throughout the region are soybean, hay, corn, wheat, and cotton (~45 M acres). Other crops such as rice, peanut, and sugarcane are limited to a few states in the region (~4.5 M acres). Citrus fruits are grown on approximately 1 M acres in FL and nearly ½ M acres of vegetables are grown annually in FL, GA, and NC. Fertilizer consumption typically runs around 2.2 M tons N, 1 M tons P2O5, and 1.5 M tons K2O. The soils in the production areas are largely sandy to sandy loam Coastal Plain types; however, silt loam and clay soils are also commonly farmed. Weather challenges occur frequently including drought, late freezes, and excessive rainfall and flooding.
